Dermalogen
Dermalogen is a a dermal filler
derived from intact pooled allogeneic collagen from cadaver donors. It is not
currently available from the manufacturer (previously Collagenesis.) It had been
available in 3.5% and 2.8% preparations in 1 ml quantities. It required
refrigeration and had a 3 month expiration. The product contained no anesthetic.
Human collagen reportedly causes less edema, resulting in a more
natural augmentation. When Dermalogen was available, it was thought to be
useful for superficial wrinkles and depressions. It is less allergenic than
bovine collagen and skin testing is often not
done. It is potentially a good product for people with multiple sensitivities.
The downside, is a theoretical risk of disease transmission, since the product
is derived from human tissue.
Dermalogen is injected into the superficial dermis using 30
gauge needle; blanching confirms the proper depth of injection. An
overcorrection of 1.2-2.0X is recommended, as the product loses water. A series
of 3-4 injections was common practice, when the product was available. The 3.5%
preparation is thick and may be difficult to inject, particularly through a
small gauge needle. The duration of effect for Dermalogen is 3-9 months.
